We meet every Sunday from 5PM to 7PM at the Bean Scene on Bernard in downtown Kelowna. The purpose of these gatherings is to organize intellectually like-minded people interested in engaging in scholarly discussions pertaining to social matters of any interest.
Our basic aim is to bridge the gap between the university and the public sphere in an effort to broaden the appeal of sociology. While professional sociology is provocative and engaging, it often tends to be reserved for the academy, and in this way, can sometimes be limiting for the non-professional sociologist.
At the Sunday Sociologist: An Intellectuals' Cafe, we retain the essence of sociology, without the specialized material, thereby making our conversations exciting, stimulating, and most importantly for our purposes here, appealing to everyone. All are welcome!
Our weekly gatherings include, among others, members of the public community, students, their parents, and faculty from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan and Okanagan College. On occasion, we invite feature speakers, to lead or facilitate dialogue with our members.
